I, like Ruby, have a soundtrack to my life. I’ve been known (to the great annoyance of both my roommates and neighbors in college) to play the same song repeatedly for hours if it suits me. When I write, I typically play certain songs that inspire the mood I need to be in to tackle the scene at hand. With that being said, here are the four songs that ruled my iPod during the writing of CAGED:
- Breathe me by Sia
- Gravity by Sara Bareilles
- Energy by Keri Hilson
- Crash by Dave Matthews Band
Lately, I’ve been bombarded by comments/questions regarding the cover of Caged. I thought that maybe I’d take a brief moment to address the issue at hand.
The short answer is, no, that is NOT my eye on the cover. I know it looks VERY much like my eye (sans fiery red, demon looking thingy in the pupil), but it’s not. My eye hasn’t been used for any of the covers (thus far), and I don’t really intend to start using it.
My cover pics have all been selected by myself and my graphic designer, Jamie Rosen. We’re currently a little stuck on what to do with the covers for books 4 and 5, which is why you won’t find them anywhere on this webpage. I’m totally open for suggestions though (Scarred and Fractured are the titles, so keep that in mind).
If I do decide to paste my peeps onto any of the future covers, I’ll be sure to let you know. You can all breathe easier now, I’m sure. 🙂
From book #2 in The Caged Series: HAUNTED (your first teaser)
I wasn’t the Ruby he’d first met, cowering naked against a tree, afraid of her own shadow. I was tarnished, worn by the events that had occurred over the past year. Erosion should leave things smoother and softer than they were before; it left me more angular and prickly. The new Ruby was learning how to do things on her own terms, consequences be damned. She would not be caged again; not for anyone or any reason.
Review by Jena Gregoire of Puretextuality.com:
I don’t even know where to start this review. I have so much that I want to say and I am petrified of giving away any storylines! Caged could very possibly be one of the best Urban Fantasy novels I have ever read. Coming from me, a die-hard lover of urban fantasy, that’s saying something! I can honestly say with no hesitation that there isn’t a single thing I dislike about this book.
From page one, I instantly fell in love with the main character, Ruby. She’s independent, sassy, sarcastic and (much like myself) she has an uncontrollable (albeit totally justifiable) addiction to fabulous footwear. She’s an artist and an all-American girl wrapped into one. To top it off, Ruby lives in Portsmouth New Hampshire, the state where both the author and I live. I heart Ruby. She’s just fantastic.
This book has a little bit of everything. It is almost non-stop action from beginning to end and the parts that are not action filled are meaningful dialog that helps to build the story (instead of fluff to fill pages). There is drama and intrigue. There are many twists and turns. There is mystery, danger and comedy. There is anger and love. And what story wouldn’t be complete without a few somewhat steamy scenes?? Caged has got them! I don’t think that I could put a label on what type of story this is because the book covers so many different feelings and facets of life.
Amber Lynn Natusch has a major hit with Caged. She has developed an original storyline that will keep you burning through the pages. I started reading this book a little over 24 hours ago and was finished this morning – that’s on top of working my normal day job. She’s got a great cast of characters that will instantly win any audience over. Caged is a complete and total hit in my eyes and I, for one, can not wait for the next in the series to be released!
Overall, this is an amazing book. Very well written. Good characters. Great storyline. Caged gets 5 stars!!!
Here’s CAGED kicking down the door into the Top Rated Contemporary Fantasy category. #49 🙂
So I’ve been asked by many of you who have already bought and read CAGED (thanks for that) when the next installment of Ruby’s adventures will be published. The short answer is: SOON. Unfortunately, I first need to put it through some rigorous editing and then format it. I’m REALLY aiming to have it in your hands by the end of January, but I’m afraid I might be pushing it with that deadline. I don’t want to sacrifice quality by rushing to publish it. For those of you that follow this blog or Facebook page, you’ll soon be getting teasers (YAY!!!) from the second book, and I’ll do my best to make them as juicy as possible.
I LOVE Haunted. Like Caged, it’s a wild ride with comedy, action, and paranormal mystery. You’ll get to meet some new characters, and get to know some old ones even better, all while following Ruby as she faces new challenges, both supernatural and otherwise. There’s a lot of personal growth that happens for her in this book.
If I had to pick which I liked more, I would personally go with Haunted, though it’s like having to pick a favorite child. I love them differently, but for me, Haunted shows more of the relationship building that (in my mind) drives the series. Caged is like an awesome first date, it hits you hard, rocks your world, then drops you off at home. Haunted is the second date where you dig deeper and learn more, all while having that same giggly feeling you get when things are fresh and new.
I’ll keep you all posted as the process continues.
Teaser will be coming your way on Sunday…you can call me Santa 🙂
I’m standing here, typing, fighting back tears, completely overwhelmed by the acknowledgments I am receiving about CAGED. I can’t put into words what it means to me to hear that other people are as invested in it as I am (so I’m not going to try).
Putting your work out to be read and judged is a very naked experience. It induces a roller coaster of emotions at the drop of a hat, and frankly, has had me on edge. Though I know someone will eventually not love it, I still don’t have to like that fact. What I DO love is having people ask me when the next one will be out, how many are there, and telling me that can’t wait to read them!
The Caged Series is my baby. I worked tirelessly on it for the past two and a half years, wrote 4 and a half books thus far, and planned a spinoff series to start sometime in late 2012/2013, all while running a business with my husband and raising our two-year-old son. I never started writing because I thought it would make me rich, or because I wanted fame.
I had an idea.
That idea became a book.
That book became a series.
That series became a part of who I am.
I love Ruby and all her crazy companions, and I love hearing how much you love them too. You make me smile with every Facebook message, email, and blog comment. Your reviews on Amazon/Barnes and Noble help others choose to read about Ruby so they, too, can love her.
Caged is still ranked in the fantasy top new releases, and I think it might just stay there for a while 🙂
